What to Wear in Tibet?

Time:07-02-2019 This Article is Composed by BudgetTibetTour

When traveling to a foreign area you need to consider many things, including documentation, culture, expenses, and so on. When planning a trip to Tibet, some of the important things that need to be considered are the weather and the clothes that you will bring along with you.

As you may already know, Tibet stretches on a mountainous region with a complex terrain, and this creates a very diverse weather climate. This is why it is important to prepare yourself and know what to expect, while at the same time packing for all situations.

Tibet Climate & Weather

There are 4 different seasons in Tibet, in addition to a monsoon season. Winter, spring, and autumn are dry seasons where there isn’t too much rain. The weather is mild from February until April like it is in most monsoon regions.

This is because Tibet is located on a high-altitude plateau, over 3,000m in height. On the other hand, the wet period, or monsoon season, during summer is also not that wet as other regions. But you can expect it to rain a couple of times throughout the week during the monsoon season.

The summer is also the period of the year that has the highest levels of oxygen. Spring and autumn are often characterized by a lack of rain. And the winter season is accompanied by low temperatures and a lot of snow.

Spring Clothing

Spring in Tibet is very warm and relaxing. In fact, April and May are probably the best months to visit Tibet when it comes to the weather. During this season, you can wear sportswear, thin jackets, and sweaters. However, throughout the night, you will need padded and wind-resistant clothes due to significant temperatures drops.

Summer Clothing

During summer, Tibet has the warmest temperatures and there are multiple festivals that can be visited during this season. Even though it’s very warm, it’s not the best idea to wear a t-shirt constantly because the Tibetan sun is extremely strong and close due to the altitude. This leads to a higher chance of getting sunburnt.

Wear pants and shirts that are thin but have long sleeves. During the night, you’ll need a bit warmer clothing.

Autumn Clothing

Autumn is neither too cold nor too hot and it is one of the best times to visit Tibet. If you climb higher on the plateau during this season, you will need a jacket and a thick coat during the night, no matter where you are. In lower areas, it is possible to wear casual sweaters, or sportswear during the day.

Winter Clothing

During winter, the number of tourists in Tibet drops. However, a lot of people still visit as they love mountain climbing and trekking. During this period, it’s essential to bring thick clothes, sweaters, winter shoes, a down jacket, and a winter coat.

Before going on your trip, make sure that you’ve packed all the necessary clothes and even bring some extra for backup, as sometimes the weather can be a bit unpredictable. For an immersive guided Tibetan experience, reach out  to Budget Tibet Travel today.

Hi Nancy

I want to visit in Oct 2020 and do the Mt Kailash tour. I want to bring two of my grandchildren - aged 8 and 10 years old. Do you think it is possible?

Dear Mr. Ul***,

Greetings from Nancy at Budget Tibet Tour, thanks for visiting our website and sending your inquiry. I think it will be no problem for you to bring your grandchildren to do the trekking, as we had clients before who took child less than 4 years old did it, and they hired porter to carry him for some part. If you like, you can hire a horse and horse man to carry them to save the energy there. And also I recommend you to arrive in Lhasa1-2days earlier to make the children adjust the high place better if you have enough time. And I will send you the tour details, please check it by email. Best regards.
